The Hobbit: The Carrock at Night

Artwork that I began a while back, before the Hobbit movie would begin to co-exist with my own mental images of the book. I postponed publishing it for several reasons, but tonight, being Tolkien's birthday, it seemed appropriate as an homage. In that vein:

The Professor!

The image shows, of course, Beorn on top of the Carrock. As Gandalf describes:

"As a bear he ranges far and wide. I once saw him sitting all alone on top of the Carrock at night watching the moon sinking towards the Misty Mountains, and I heard him growl in the language of bears: 'The day will come when they will perish and I shall go back!' That is why I believe he once came from the mountains himself."
