Another Silmarillion illustration: Maedhros and Maglor at the first rising of Vingilot.

Now when first Vingilot was set to sail in the seas of heaven, it rose unlooked for, glittering and bright; and the people of Middle-earth beheld it from afar and wondered, and they took it for a sign, and called it Gil-Estel, the Star of High Hope. And when this new star was seen at evening, Maedhros spoke to Maglor his brother, and he said: 'Surely that is a Silmaril that shines now in the West?'
And Maglor answered: 'If it be truly the Silmaril which we saw cast into the sea that rises again by the power of the Valar, then let us be glad; for its glory is now seen by many, and is yet secure from all evil.'

(J.R.R. Tolkien, The Silmarillion, Chapter 24, Of the Voyage of Eärendil and the War of Wrath)

---

Photoshop 7.0, about 7 hours. Originally intended as a picture of Maglor 'singing in pain and regret beside the waves', probably watching a departing elven ship , but it looked unfinished at that time, so the concept changed to the one you can see now. I actually meant to call this 'Silmarillion: Star of High Hope', but all DA's character limit in the title would allow was 'Star of High Hop', which is... a little off the mark, somehow. Oh well.

I really like the contrast between the two brethren--that Maglor would be the one to wade forward into the water is both fitting and somehow heartbreaking--it's such a futile gesture, but somehow hopeful too, which captures the moment in the book so perfectly. Great job.

So many beautiful and heartbreaking passages in the chapter, including this moment between between the brothers. I love how you have Maglor to be the one wading into the water, but Maedhros standing back as they gazed across the sky. It fits perfectly with how I see their characters at this particular point of time.

Thank you so much for sharing this. ♥

I have a serious addiction to Maglor.

In fact, I need my Silmarillion license removed before I start doing my homework in Sindarin.
