A scene from J.R.R. Tolkien's Silmarillion: During the attack on the Havens of Sirion Elwing cast herself into the sea ([link]) and was rescued from the waves by Ulmo.

For Ulmo bore up Elwing out of the waves, and he gave her the likeness of a great white bird, and upon her breast there shone as a star the Silmaril, as she flew over the water to seek Eärendil her beloved.

(J.R.R. Tolkien, The Silmarillion, Chapter 24, Of the Voyage of Eärendil and the War of Wrath)

Oh, I like this! You can see the transformation, just as she hits the water.

Yes, exactly. :) I'm glad this came across.

Very different for Tolkien fan art. It really captures the sea, the bird and the woman simply but beautifully. Congrats!

Thank you very much. :) I tried a more realistic style at first, but for this, something abstract felt more appropriate - but either way, I'm glad you enjoyed it.

A beautiful image - almost abstract yet it conveys the essence of woman, wings and sea.

Thank you. I always found Elwing's being turned into a bird slightly more fantastical than most of the rest of the Silmarillion, so that probably comes through in the artwork. Glad you like it, though. :)

Wow. That's really amazing how there's that blurring of woman and bird. Really stunning.
