Silmarillion: Arien by LadyElleth Silmarillion: Arien by LadyElleth
:iconqitian:, I know this is a day late - it is for you all the same. Happy birthday!

A response, of sorts, to a conversation we had a while back (as I'm sure you remember) - about Arien, Tilion, and their respective vessels - or not. So now here is my interpretation of your initial idea, and I hope you'll like it. Arien, guardian of the sun in Tolkien's Middle-earth.

Too bright were the eyes of Arien for even the Eldar to look on, and leaving Valinor she forsook the form and raiment which like the Valar she had worn there, and she was as a naked flame, terrible in the fullness of her splendor.

(J.R.R. Tolkien, The Silmarillion, Of the Sun and Moon and the Hiding of Valinor)

It is the middle of a sunny summer day

I am running down the stairs

quickly and excitedly, with my neighbours following me.

We all want to see the Sun

It just fell down in the front yard

I saw it coming down like an overripe cantaloupe,

staining the sky with sticky, succulent golden juices.

There it is,

lying on the ground,

a giant orange, trampling the grass it landed on,

squirting its warm essence all over our bodies.

The neighbourhood dogs are running around,

barking at this strange visitor.

I approach it warily. I touch it.

It is warm and beautiful,

glistening in the mid-noon light.

I remember well the feelings of amazement, incredulity,

inexplicable joy overwhelming me

and the comical expressions of confusion

on the faces

of my neighbours.

Gorgeous, absolutely stunning!
Has definitely changed the way I look at Arien; and a heck of a lot better than my thoughts by a long way. :)

Beautiful image of Arien, Elleth! The heat blazes from the image. I really like the orb of the Sun in her embrace, and even more, that the Sun in her arms resembles the giant orb of plasma around which our little planet orbits. It seems to me that you've captured an artistic image of astrophysics here, and not surprisingly, that tickles me! I always thought Tolkien's offhanded remark that sunspots were due to Melkor's "ravishing" Arien and subsequent marring (see HoMe X, "Myths Transformed," thereby connecting his mythology to real-world astronomy. I see the same in your lovely picture.

I certainly remember that conversation. It shattered my world-view after all (... well, my understanding of the fictional mythology of - oh you know what I mean) ;)

And I still like my version (and this your interpretation) better. So there. You've captured it perfectly, actually, except you made it look far more realistic than anything I'd be able to come up with. (If realistic is the right word, considering the subject matter, but again you know what I mean. Right?)

And after I was beginning to be convinced that everyone (except for the four people who managed to visit) had entirely forgotten about my birthday, this was a very pleasant surprise indeed. Thank you.
