An illustration for SWG's Akallabêth in August project, my first collaboration with a fanfiction author, the brilliant Pandemonium_213. I encourage you all to go read her stuff (though proceed with caution if you're placing value on a literal take on Tolkien's canon).

This is Sauron defying the lightning on the pinnacle of his temple in Armenelos. Full view definitely recommended!

Now the lightnings increased and slew men upon the hills, and in the fields, and in the streets of the city; and a fiery bolt smote the dome of the Temple and shore it asunder, and and it was wreathed in flame. But the Temple itself was unshaken and Sauron stood there upon the pinnacle and defied the lightning and was unharmed; and in that hour men called him a god and did all that he would.

(J.R.R. Tolkien, The Silmarillion, Akallabêth)

And this is Pandemonium's take on the same scene.

The wings of the clouds descended upon him like a falcon upon a hare. The swirling murk wrapped itself around the pinnacle. Thunder became castigation, and the wind-driven hail stung of punishment.

"I am here, Mânawenûz," he whispered in his mother tongue. Then he lifted his voice, putting the power of the Ainur behind it so that he could be heard over the thunder and the howling wind, and he cried out in defiance: "Come! Come and take me, Eagles of Manwë!"

Mairon spread his arms, turning his palms up and tilted his head back, exposing his throat, just as men's throats invited the holy blade during the sacrifices. He invited the lightning, but still he waited.

Then it came. The first bolt struck the cage, wreathing it in white flame. The scent of ozone engulfed him. Mairon felt his heart skip a beat but watched entranced while the charge crackled around the copper bars, pleased and relieved that his device had worked according to theory. The lightning jabbed at him again and again, its claws trying to gain entry into the cage but finding none. Mairon smiled with triumph when the storm's talons were rendered impotent to harm him. [...]

After throwing a final spear, the thunder grumbled with frustration, and the storm rolled away toward the eastern seas. The Zigûr returned to the temple then. They beheld him with wonder and blanched before his grim countenance. The gathered crowd parted to let him pass into the sanctuary. First one murmured it, then another, then more, their voices swelling as they followed the high priest into the temple:

"He defied the lightning!"

"The Zigûr turned back the spears of Manwë!"

"He is a god. Yes, the Zigûr is a god!"

Mairon turned his smile of satisfaction inward while his congregation clamored around him, keeping his face solemn while he walked toward his seat before the statue of Melkor, but he was well pleased:
Let there be no doubt now.

(Pandemonium_213, Into this Wild Abyss: A Tempest's Name)

Yes, Sauron used a Tesla Cage to defy the lightning, using science to further his power. :D My thanks, Pande, for this collaboration. It was far more fun than I expected, and the amounts of squee have yet to be topped!

Hah! This time I kept the praise for until you'd posted this. I think the result is totally worth braving the pains of manipulating architecture ;)

This is a scene that's always been pretty vivid before my mind's eye even when reading the short paragraph Tolkien wrote on it (with slightly different architecture), but your manip and Pandë's story both nonetheless serve to illustrate it even more clearly. Great work!

"though proceed with caution if you're placing value on a literal take on Tolkien's canon"

Ha! I love the disclaimer. I keep threatening Dawn with writing a self-important and opinionated essay on myth vs. canon in the Tolkien legendarium, but somehow I keep getting distracted.

But more than the disclaimer -- far more -- I love your rendition of Sauron defying the lightning. My Dark Muse approves of it heartily. The underlying subversive elements make me wiggle with glee, and as a former architecture major (part of my very checkered undergrad studies), I am awestruck by how you handle the structures. And the sky, oh, my...the sky!

Thanks again for a very enjoyable collaboration!

The picture is awesome. I love the way the dome is actually fuzzy at the edges to represent the rain splashing on the surface. Heh. And that many lightning bolts at once is an impressive sight. Mairon has a lot of self-control to brave this kind of weather, and I think it comes across well in the image. Of course, I can't help but to imagine poking him and watching him sliiiide down the dome. I'm not sure if it's purposeful (and I don't know the technical terms), but the part right under the dome looks very much like a ring. ^_^;;

:D I should hope it was - architecture is something I'm not going to touch again so soon unless it's just an element in the picture and doesn't need major editing. Somehow when looking at those structures, my brain mostly just blanks out. ;)

As for different architecture - this isn't necessarily my own vision either as far as architecture goes. Maybe one day, when I've recovered from this, Castel Sant'Angelo will have to suffer my attentions. :D

Oh, please do write it. Would some gentle prodding help, or is it the Pharma-dûr demons that keep you from writing this?

Thank you so much for the feedback, too. :) As for the structures, they certainly made me squirm like DM and his priests were going to put me on the altar (probably mentioned the architectural problems before), though the heretic elements more than made up for it.

Thank you, too!

Heh, thanks. The image of Sauron sliding down the temple is a scream, but probably not something I'd like to see happen in RL. ;)
